Kharge: not even 20 p.c. of his promises implemented

“Funds for irrigation down to Rs. 3,300 crore from Rs. 4,350 crore”

Davangere: The former Chief Minister, B.S. Yeddyurappa, came in for sharp attack from Congress leaders here on Sunday for his handling of Karnataka’s finances, during the Janata Dal (S)-BJP coalition government, and the fall in the growth rate.

Inaugurating the farmers’ convention organised to mark the launching of the party’s campaign, KPCC president M. Mallikarjun Kharge said that Mr. Yeddyurappa, who held the Finance portfolio, made 750 promises and not even 20 per cent of them were implemented. Addressing the crowd that had come from various parts of Davangere, Haveri, Shimoga, Chitradurga, Dharwad, Gadag and Bellary districts at the Government Boys High School grounds, Mr. Kharge said that funds for irrigation came down to Rs. 3,300 crore from Rs. 4,350 crore.

In the budget, Mr. Yeddyurappa allocated funds for maths, but did not distribute sites/houses under the Ashraya scheme, launched by the S.M. Krishna government.

Not one BPL card was given by the previous government and the quantity of rice supplied to the poor came down to 12 kg from 25 kg and on unit system. Mr. Kharge said that the Congress would distribute 25 kg of rice at Rs. 2 a kg, if voted to power. Even the promise of giving colour TV was aimed at awakening the poor about the atrocities being committed on them and the development programmes.Recalling the fall of the governments, led by Janata Parivar leaders, at the Centre and in the State, Mr. Kharge said only the Congress could provide a stable government which would aim at improving the living conditions of theweaker sections.

Former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna said that for the first time thousands of tanks in the State were rejuvenated.
