This Day That Age
Diplomatic sources said in Washington on April 12 that President Eisenhower had sent a personal message to the French Prime Minister, M. Felix Gaillard, expressing concern over the situation in North Africa. The message was delivered to M. Gaillard in Paris on April 11 by Mr. Robert Murphy, the Deputy Under-Secretary of State, who is representing the United States on the U.S.-British Good Offices Mission attempting to help in the settlement of the French-Tunisian dispute. The message expressed the President’s hopes for its success. The sources said the President expressed his views "as a friend of France" who was aware how difficult the problem was.
