Guwahati: The former Assam Chief Minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, on Sunday joined his parent party, the Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), in calling for unification of regional political forces on the eve of Rongali Assamese new year Bihu. “It is the only solution to fight the corrupt Congress. Unification of regional and non-Congress forces is the need of the hour,” Mr. Mahanta told journalists. Mr. Mahanta is the founder-president of the AGP. He later resigned to form the AGP (Progressive). He has already formed a 11-member committee to discuss the process of unification with like-minded parties. “Unity possible”Mr. Mahanta, who is tipped to make a comeback to the parent party, said there was possibility of the two AGP factions uniting. “We have been always stressing the need for unification and that is a possibility,” he said when asked about chances of the two factions uniting. “The Opposition is completely divided and if there was any type of unity there was no scope for the Congress to come back to power for second time,” he said. “The government is yet to make its stand clear on major issues like holding talks with the ultras through the agencies appointed by them [militants] or through intellectuals,” he said. — PTI
