Suspected Maoists kill 3 CPI(M) men

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Suspected Maoists gunned down three people in the Salboni area of West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district on Sunday.

According to the CPI(M) zonal committee, one of the victims was the party’s local leader and the other two were supporters of the party.

The men were supervising earth-digging work under the rural employment programme, Paschim Medinipur District Magistrate N. S Nigam told The Hindu over telephone.

The three were among a group of eight people, who were abducted from the worksite. The other five were later released.

The bodies were found in a nearby forest. Some leaflets left behind suggested the involvement of Maoists in the killings.

The police were combing the area and additional forces deployed there, Mr. Nigam said.

Maoists are active in parts of Paschim Medinipur district that adjoins Jharkhand.
