Death pleader dies

Jamshedpur: Dilip Machua, who had pleaded to the President to either arrange for his treatment or sanction euthanasia early this week, died in the government-run MGM hospital here on Sunday.

Machua suffered a major injury on his spinal chord in a road accident in November last and he became paralysed from his waist downwards.

According to Ram Singh Munda, general secretary of the Helpless People’s Service Forum, Machua was re-admitted to the hospital on April 10 after his health deteriorated. Earlier, in a letter to President Pratibha Patil on April 4, Machua, a slag-picker, pleaded to make arrangements for his proper treatment or sanction him euthanasia, as he did not wish to die in bits and pieces. Machua has two daughters, aged three and four, and an old mother. He wanted the government to adopt his daughters and bear their educational expenses. — PTI
