Venkata Ramana shocks Jha

NEW DELHI: Lowly-rated J. Venkata Ramana created a flutter by upsetting top seed Sriram Jha and holding former National ‘A’ player G.B. Joshi in successive rounds of the second all-India Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee international rating chess tournament here on Sunday.

After four rounds, second seed Himanshu Sharma, fellow International Masters S. Satyapragyan and Saptarshi Roy, along with seasoned campaigner from Karnataka, B.S. Shivanandan, J. Ramakrishna and P. Praveen Prasad, shared the lead with four points.

The results: Fourth round: Himanshu Sharma (4) bt Puneet Jaiswal (3); V.A.V. Rajesh (3) lost to S. Satyapragyan (4); Gurpreet Pal Singh (3) lost to Saptarshi Roy (4); B.S. Shivanandan (4) bt Chinmay Kulkarni (3); Atanu Lahiri (3.5) drew with Vivek Shukla (3.5); Santosh Sinha (3.5) drew with D.P. Singh (3.5).

J. Ramakrishna (4) bt K.V. Shantharam (3); J. Venkata Ramana (3.5) drew with G.B. Joshi (3.5); Nassir Wajih (3.5) drew with Manav Saxena (3.5); P. Praveen Prasad (4) bt Rishi Thariani (3).
