Promises rice at Rs. 2 a kg, free electricity for 16 lakh irrigation pump sets DAVANGERE: BJP leader and the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has said that the United Progressive Alliance Government has failed to contain the rise in prices of essential commodities. Addressing a party workers conference at Honnali on Sunday, he said that as in the case of rice, wheat and maize, the prices of cement and iron had gone to such an extent that poor and middle class people could not even think of having a house of their own. Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the Centre, which had not done anything although farmers were committing suicide across the country, had announced loan waiver prior to the elections in order to get the support of farmers. Ulterior motivesPeople were not that foolish not to understand the “ulterior motives” of the Congress, he said, adding that the Union Government had copied the scheme introduced some months ago by the BJP-led coalition government in the State. Mr. Yeddyurappa promised to give free electricity for 16 lakh irrigation pump sets in the State if the BJP would come to power. An amount of Rs. 65 crore was required every year to give free electricity to IP sets, he said. Mr. Yeddyurappa also announced loans at three per cent interest to the poor, senior citizens and self-help groups, and promised to give rice at Rs. 2 a kg if his party came to power. The former Chief Minister said that he would set up a revolving fund of Rs. 500 crore to pay compensation for farmers when there was crop loss owing to drought and floods. Arrack sale banHe said that he had introduced a ban on arrack sale following the request of women, particularly those in rural areas. K.S. Eshwarappa alleged that Congress leader Siddaramaiah had falsely claimed that funds had been granted to the Kanaka Abivruddi Authority. Mr. Siddaramaiah had not done anything for the Kuruba community, he alleged. D.H. Shankaramurthy and G.M. Siddeshwar were among others who spoke on the occasion.
