Sir, — The initiative taken by ACICM to field its candidates for the Assembly elections, as reported on April 8, is commendable. On account of the several conditions laid out concerning the candidates’ probity, education and the affidavit, it gives the voters an indirect “right of recall”, which is absent in the existing election laws. Whether or not candidates come under these conditions and whether or not they win a seat are not as important as having spelt the principles that mainstream parties would do well to emulate. The Central Election Commission would do well to include, if possible, the “affidavit clause” as an interim measure, until the law is suitably amended. Maj.Gen. S.G. Vombatkere (Retd) Mysore Ban plastic buntingsSir, — The Election Commission should instruct political parties and individuals not to use plastic for buntings and other election related materials. Banners and posters should be removed immediately after the election is over. Those who deface walls by writing slogans and sticking posters should be fined. Every one should follow the model code of conduct strictly. D.B.N. Murthy, Bangalore Public interest litigationsSir, — Some judges of the Supreme Court are reported to have said that public interest litigation (PIL) had lost its purpose since the executive was not taking action on the court rulings in many such cases. They want the Supreme Court to be selective in accepting PIL petitions. This is unfortunate because for the stressed common man, the court is the last resort in getting some redress. V.V.S. Mani Bangalore Music festivalSir, — There is going to be a feast of classical music at various places in Bangalore in connection with the “Ramanavami” festival, as usual. However, for senior citizens, living in places far from the venues of these concerts, it is hard to commute up and down, especially in the late night after the concerts are over. The various organisers and All India Radio will be doing a great service to music lovers if they join to broadcast the concerts either live or recorded on the 100.10 FM, ‘Amritha Varshini’ channel, which is devoted to classical music. K.V. Pathy, Bangalore Roads in poor shapeSir, — The roads in J.P. Nagar, Phase V, Bangalore, especially in Vinayaka Nagar colony, need to be paved and tarred. These roads are full of potholes. N. Raju, Bangalore Readers can send their letters to letters.mysore @thehindu.co.in
