Quick response from Chennai Corporation

In response to my letter published in these columns, the Chennai Corporation removed the old defective streetlights and provided bright new streetlights on the Eleventh and Seventh Cross Streets near Ram Lok Apartments in Sastri Nagar.

I wish to thank the Corporation in this regard.

New coin poses problem

The recently issued five-rupee coin very much looks like 50-paise coin and people will easily be confused.

It is better if the Reserve Bank of India stops further issue of five-rupee coins to avoid inconvenience to the public. It should also ensure that whenever new coins or notes are issued, they are clearly distinguishable from other denominations.

Alarming traffic at Porur signal

The traffic at the Porur signal is alarming.

A large number of buses, cars, two-wheelers, autorickshaws, and share-autos are plying on the four sides of the signal.

If red light blinks on the sides of Saidapet and Poonamallee, the vehicles are lined up on the road up to the State Bank of India branch on the Saidapet side and up to the Andhra Bank branch on the Poonamallee side. The situation is the same on the Vadapalani and Kundrathur sides. Pedestrians find it difficult to go on these roads.

The police control the traffic to a great extent and their work is appreciable.

The authorities concerned and if possible, the Ministers also, should visit the spot and find a solution to this problem.

Pedestrians’ woes

Ever since the flyover started functioning at the Adyar signal near L.B. Road, the pedestrian crossing is becoming difficult day after day, especially during rush hour, thanks to the increasing number of buses plying on the road.

The difficulty experienced by senior citizens is great since the time gap between the pedestrian crossing and the burning of green light is narrow.

Even before crossing half the road, the green light vanishes, resulting in confusion at the crossing.

In order to enable senior citizens to cross the road with ease, the time slot allotted for the green light should be increased considerably.

I request the authorities concerned to address the problem immediately.

Advance MRTS train timings

At present the MRTS train services operate from Velachery to Park Station from about 7 a.m.

It will be good for the commuters if trains start earlier, say, by about 6 a.m. or at least, by 6. 30 a.m. for the benefit of people who want to go to Mylapore, Central Railway Station and such areas.

Will the Railways consider this?

Cables posing danger

This refers to the news item, “Underground ducts for OFCs,” which appeared in The Hindu dated April 2, 2008.

It is a welcome move by the Chennai Corporation to lay underground ducts to carry overhead fibre optic cables of Internet and Cable TV service.

At the same time, the roads are often damaged to set right TNEB streetlights and BSNL landline cables.

Not only in Corporation limits, but also in other municipal areas, these cables are tied to the streetlight posts and phone line posts, posing great danger to the road-users.

For instance, on the entire stretch of the Thirumangalam-Ambattur Estate Road, all streetlights posts in the centre median are full of cables.

Will the municipalities also take corrective steps, as does the Chennai Corporation?

Install post box

At present, only one post office is functioning at Dhandeeswaram, Velachery.

Earlier I suggested that a sub-post office be opened at West Velachery (either Lakshmi Nagar or Sri Venkateswara Nagar), but the Postal Department has opened one at TNEB Colony near the Lake Road.

In Velachery, post boxes are installed only in some areas such as Vijay Nagar, Guru Nanak College and Vijaynagar Bus terminus etc. Senior citizens and physically challenged people cannot go to the post office situated opposite the Latta Fancy Store.

Further, in the Lakshmi Nagar (West Velachery), a post box is hanging in rusted condition.

In order to mitigate the difficulties, it is suggested to the postal authorities, on behalf of the residents of West Velachery, to install one permanent cylindrical post box in front of Sri Murugan Thirumana Mandapam (100 feet bypass road) by which not only senior citizens and handicapped people, but other residents of West Velachery (Lakshmi Nagar / Gangai Nagar / Sri Venkateswara Nagar) will also benefit.
