Kedamangalam Sadanandan

KOCHI: Veteran Kathaprasangam exponent Kedamangalam Sadanandan died at his house in Paravur on Sunday morning. The 84-year-old master story-teller had been undergoing treatment for cancer for some time. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter. The cremation, with official honours, will be held on Monday at Manayath, his home.

Mr. Sadanandan had refused to bow down to the infirmities of his age and continued his vocation till last year. His last performance was on February 16 this year.

“I wish to close my eyes forever while standing before the audience, telling a story,” Mr. Sadanandan said, about three years ago at a public function. He loved the touching lines from ‘Ramanan,’ the legendary poem written by Changampuzha Krishna Pillai, that he had presented as Kathaprasangam on around 3,500 stages. Mr. Sadanandan has completed 64 years on stage as a Kathaprasangam artiste and he presented over 40 stories for over 50,000 hours on 15,000 stages. He once remarked that people are the true guardians of an artiste and thanked them for recognising him. He had expressed anguish at the chaos prevailing in society and called for a concerted effort by artistes and the intelligentsia to protect society.

Kedamangalam had acted in 40 movies, scripted 12 films and wrote songs for about 100 movies. Many awards came calling on Mr. Sadanandan, including the Sambasivan Dhanya Kerala Praveen Award and the Kalaratnam award instituted by the Travancore Devaswom Board. He was also a recipient of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi fellowship and over 250 other honours.
