Handmade paper unit for tsunami victims

CUDDALORE: District Collector Rajendra Ratnoo laid the foundation for a hand-made paper unit at Killai near here on Saturday.
The Rs 22-lakh unit is being set up for the benefit of 200 tsunami victims.
Mr. Ratnoo said besides providing livelihood the handmade paper unit would also be eco-friendly.
He appreciated the initiative taken by the Unorganised Workers’ Federation for setting up the unit.
Financial assistance
President of the Federation Geetha Ramakrishnan said financial assistance of of Rs.11.5 lakh would be given under the Tsunami Emergency Assistant Project.
Founder of Bharathi Trust Siddamma said the Ireland Fishery Federation and Machinery had helped in buying the land. Secretary of the Annie Besent Ammaiyar Coastal Women’s Federation G.K Krishnaveni said the locally available raw materials such as banana tree fibre and waste paper would be converted into pulp for making handmade paper.
