Nitish Kumar drops 10 Ministers

Special Correspondent

PATNA: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar carried out the much awaited reshuffle and expansion of the Council of Ministers, dropping 10 ministers and inducting 19 others on Sunday.

Governor R.S. Gavai administered the oath of office to 17 Cabinet Ministers and two Ministers of State after accepting the resignation of five Cabinet Ministers and as many Ministers of State.

Among those taken in was Jitan Ram Manjhi, who had been dropped from the cabinet soon after his induction when Mr. Kumar assumed office some 29 months ago, on the ground that he faced criminal charges. Mr. Manjhi has since been cleared of the charges.

Among those dropped were Health Minister Chandra Mohan Rai, Building Construction Minister Monazir Hassan and Social Welfare Minister Rameshwar Paswan.

Mr. Kumar had obtained the resignation of all his Ministers before undertaking the exercise.

Most of those dropped contested the allegation that they had been dropped on grounds of non-performance. The vocal ones included Janardan Singh Sigriwal and Ajit Kumar.
