MOSCOW: The Czech Republic lost its Davis Cup quarterfinal to Russia on Sunday after Tomas Berdych injured his ankle during the match against Nikolay Davydenko. World No. 9 Berdych fell when he lunged for a forehand on break point against Davydenko’s serve in the fourth game of the fifth set. Argentina, at home, and Spain, away, too clinched their semifinal spots with wins over Sweden and Germany. The results: At Moscow: Russia 3 bt Czech Republic 2 (Nikolay Davydenko bt Tomas Berdych 6-3, 2-6, 6-7(5), 6-3, 1-2 (retd.); Marat Safin lost to Lukas Dlouhy 3-6, 3-6).
