The Life Insurance Corporation of India revised the pay scales of the then serving employees with effect from 01.08.1997. Those who were in service on 01.08.1997 and retired thereafter are given the benefit, according to the revised scales and pension was fixed accordingly. Again, it revised the scales of their employees with effect from 01.08.2002. The retirees after 01.08.2002 are given the benefit of pension as per the new scales as on 01.08.2002. Another revision for the existing employees is due shortly. The pensioners of the Central Government are given the revised pensions with 01.01.1996 and 01.01.2006 respectively as per the recommendations of Fifth and Sixth Pay commissions. After prolonged legal battle, the Supreme Court ordered the Central Government and Port Trust to remove anomalies and grant parity in pension for those retired before and after 1998 (The Hindu, 09.12.2007). The LIC and the Central Government are refusing to revise and update the pension of those who retired before 01.08.1997.There are vast disparities in pension for those who retired before 01.08.1997 and who are retiring recently. N. Kasilingam, Tuticorin. Street becomes very narrowSannidhi Street at Tiruchendur has become very narrow, owing to raising of pavements by about two feet from the ground level on both the sides and hence, barricades have been erected on all the entries to it to prevent entry of four wheelers. Surprisingly, only one barricade remains at the East Car side entrance and all others have been removed. As a result, vehicles and trucks have started entering. Pedestrians find it very difficult to negotiate when they face vehicles. Even if the public want to use the pavements, they cannot do so, owing to heavy encroachments at many places by shopkeepers, house owners, vendors etc. In view of the difficulties of the public, I request the authorities concerned to consider banning entry of four-wheelers to the Sannidhi Street. K.K. Krishnamurthy, Tiruchendur. Dilapidated road The bus stand road and both entry and exit points in Ambasaudram bus stand are dilapidated. It was constructed recently and concrete flooring was laid. Numerous ditches and potholes have been formed with the recent rain. The entire stretch of road is muddy and strewn with the gravels, causing inconvenience. M. Muralidharan, Alwarkurichi. Nanguneri SEZ projectIt is very interesting to note that the Tamil Nadu Government has succeeded in reviving the Nanguneri Special Economic Zone project through the newly identified Hyderabad-based AMR group as the project promoter. The Nanguneri SEZ will be set up on 2,520 acres at a cost of Rs.630 crore and it will generate employment to 70,000 youths in Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. It is the responsibility of the Government to complete the project on time.
P. Senthil Saravana Durai, Vazhavallan, Tuticorin district. Entrance examination to standard VIThough entrance examination to engineering and medical courses has been abolished in Tamil Nadu, it is compulsory for students of sixth standard English medium aided missionary schools. Hence, a common entrance examination to such schools may be conducted by the Chief Educational Officer of Kanyakumari district. V. Kumar, Thekkurichy, Kanyakumari district.
