Letters to the Editor
It is amusing to find analysts trying to explain the Maoists’ success in the Nepal elections. Not once did political commentators hint that the people would vote for them to ensure that peace is not disturbed in the country. So the argument in the article “Enter Nepal’s Maoist establishment” (April 14) that a major reason for the Maoists’ victory was the people’s desire to prevent them from returning to the jungle is unconvincing. It is an attempt to rob the voters of their affirmative vote in favour of the CPN(M), which is rather unfortunate. Were it not for the Maoists’ armed resistance, there would have been no election to the Constituent Assembly. Were it not for their military strength, domestic and international reactionaries would have succeeded in physically and politically weakening them. All the charges of the Maoists shying away from elections stand exposed as nothing but attempts by elements within and outside Nepal to defer elections. Gautam Navlakha, New Delhi The election has ushered in a new era of democracy in the Himalayan kingdom. The people of Nepal have shown remarkable political awareness by voting the CPN (M) to power. It is now up to the Maoists to foster democracy and live up to the expectations of the people. It is also time for Maoists and naxalites in India to follow the example of their counterparts in Nepal and join the political mainstream. Devendra L. Abbigeri, Dharwad P.U. Krishnan, Udhagamandalam
