HYDERABAD: India’s Gagan Narang clinched the men’s 10-metre air rifle bronze in the ‘Good Luck Beijing’ ISSF World Cup shooting championships at Beijing on Monday afternoon, according to information received here. The Melbourne Commonwealth Games quadruple gold medallist finished just half a point and .4 of a point behind China’s Qinan Zhu and Matthew Emmons of the USA respectively. Along the way, the Hyderabad crackshot eclipsed world-record holder Thomas Farnik of Austria, World Championship winner and compatriot Abhinav Bindra, winner of several world cups Peter Sidi of Hungary and Athens Games bronze medallist Jozef Gonci of Slovakia among 80 marksmen from across the world. A pointerSpeaking to The Hindu from the Olympic range in Beijing, venue of the current competition and where the Olympic contests will be held in August, he said this win in the year’s first World Cup proved he could cope with the constant pressure to prove himself, especially with the uncertainty surrounding the Indian squad’s composition for the premier quadrennial games. His second medal in China, after a gold in the Guangzhou World Cup two years ago, Gagan was placed third with 597 after the qualifying rounds in the morning, behind Hungary’s Sidi and Emmons, both having logged 599 out of 600. The Hyderabad lad, the first Indian to win an Olympic quota place for the Beijing Games, shot a 700.3 and missed the gold by 0.5 points. Three other shooters had 597 besides Narang, who however made the final thanks to tallying 100 in his last three series. Bindra didn’t make the grade, his 595 placing him 18th in the final standings. The results: Men’s air rifle: 1. Zhu Qinan (Chn) 700.8 (597); 2. Matthew Emmons (US) 700.7 (599); 3. Gagan Narang 700.3 (597); 18. Abhinav Bindra 595; 20. P.T. Raghunath 594. MQS: Hardeep Singh 590; Sanjeev Rajput 587. Women’s trap: 1. Gao E (Chn) 93 (71); 2. Yong Hui Pak (PRK) 90 (69); 3. Irina Larricheva (Rus) 89 (68); 31. Shagun Chowdhary 63; 40. Seema Tomar 61.
