LONDON: Defending champion United States and Argentina joined Russia and Spain in the Davis Cup semifinals on Sunday by clinching their ties with a match to spare. Andy Roddick beat Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 to lead the Americans to a 4-1 victory over France. In Buenos Aires, David Nalbandian overcame blustery winds, blowing clay dust and Robin Soderling on Sunday, winning 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 6-4, 9-7 to give Argentina an invincible 3-1 lead over Sweden. The results send the United States to Spain and Russia to Argentina in September for the semifinals. The results: At Winston-Salem: USA 4 bt France 1 (Andy Roddick bt Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 6-3, 6-2; James Blake bt Richard Gasquet 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4).
