A sight to behold: A ‘Vishukkaazcha’ organised in front of the Secretariat on Monday by Agri Friends, an organisation representing agriculture assistants in the Department of Agriculture. As many as 100 farm products were displayed. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vishu, the festival of prosperity, was celebrated in the city with traditional fervour and gaiety on Monday. Right from early morning, devotees flocked city temples to have a glimpse of the Vishukkani and attend special pujas. In Hindu households across the city, the day began with family members making their way to puja rooms blindfolded to view the ‘Kani’ as a harbinger of good fortune. Children and younger members of every family received ‘Vishukkaineettam’ from the elders. In some colonies, the celebrations were marked by the bursting of crackers. With educational institutions and government offices remaining closed, traffic petered out by noon. Commercial areas wore a sleepy look compared to the brisk activity on Vishu eve. By evening, holiday crowds converged at leisure and recreation spots in the city. The rise in price of essential commodities was a dampener on the Vishu celebrations. The festival markets opened by the Department of Civil Supplies however came as a relief for a large section of households in the city. Social service organisations celebrated Vishu by organising functions at destitute homes and orphanages.
