Laxman stuns Tamaz Gelashvili

New Delhi: Grandmaster-norm aspirant R.R. Laxman stunned second-seeded Georgian GM Tamaz Gelashvili and Abhijeet Gupta upset fifth seeded Ukrainian GM Yuriy Kuzubov as the eighth round proved highly productive for the Indians in the 10th Dubai Open chess tournament in Dubai on Sunday.

With one round to go, Laxman and Abhijeet share the fourth spot at six points, half-a-point behind leaders China’s Li Chao, Georgia’s Merab Gagunashvili and Filipino wonder-kid Wesley So.

In the Gausdal Classics, G.N. Gopal scored his first victory at the expense of USA’s Eric Moskow in 44 moves in the sixth round at Gausdal, Norway. However, Sandipan Chanda suffered his second successive loss after a 31-move battle with top seed Vasilios Kotronias.

In Group ‘B’, S. Kidambi (five points) emerged as the sole leader after beating Poland’s Arkadiusz Leniart in just 29 moves in the sixth round. Fellow International Master S. Arun Prasad (4.5) drew with fourth seed Lithuania’s Aloyzas Kveinys in 70 moves.
