The alacrity with which the State government manned battlestations to ‘save’ the British Library in Thiruvananthapuram has evoked mixed reactions in many people. While many book lovers are happy that the Library’s collection would still be available to those in the city, there are those who wonder why the government does not bring out the same fire power to ‘save’ other libraries directly under its control. Why is there a lack of enthusiasm in the case of libraries in the public sector? But then, even when funds are made availablethere are institutions that fail to respond with enthusiasm. The Kerala University Library is a case in point. Even though it is many months since Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac gifted Rs.3 crore for the modernisation of the Library, the University of Kerala has put a sloth to shame with its ‘speed’ in implementing the programme. The University’s ‘tape’ seems to be a brighter shade of red than the government’s. G. Mahadevan
