BHUBANESWAR: On the Bengali New Year on Monday, the city-based Bengalis hosted a number of events to celebrate the occasion. But, one that stood apart was an exhibition of paintings by a Bengali that attracted members of both the communities – the Oriyas and Bengalis alike. At the Orissa Modern Art Gallery in the city, artist Manas Shome’s week-long solo show was opened by Orissa Lalit Kala Akademi president J.C. Kanungo whose address revealed how deep was the bond between the artists and art traditions of Bengal and Orissa, like the two states sharing a long common boundary and using languages of the same family along with the Assamese. He further reminded how Bengal school of art and Tagore’s Shantiniketan played a pivotal role in shaping the sensibility of several eminent Oriya artists. Tagore stayed in an Orissa village and composed poems, he added. “It’s a befitting occasion to host the show. Such events will strengthen the bond between the artists of Bengal and Orissa,” felt Gallery director Tarakant Parida. “Bhubaneswar will soon come up as a major centre of art activities ,” felt Manas, an IT professional who has recently shifted to the city after his six years of stint in Bangalore . “I am here to explore the art market,” he says.
