Rangasamy on Tuesday exhorted students to take up civil services as a career. Participating in the 40th college day celebrations of Bharathidasan Government College for Women, he said the students should take up the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations for a career in the administrative service. “Students of arts colleges should prepare for the Indian Administrative Service after the completion of degree. There are many doctors and engineers but we need to see Puducherry in the UPSC list of IAS officers. Students must think about this career option,” he said. He also urged professors to create interest among students to take up a career in the administrative service. “We have also brought in an examination centre for UPSC in Puducherry. Facilities for coaching are also available,” Mr. Rangasamy said. Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan said the government was planning to introduce a curriculum which provided employment opportunities. Stressing the need for human resource for development of the Union Territory, he said Puducherry stood second in higher education in the country. With the problem of encroachment causing delay in the construction of an auditorium for the college, Mr. Shahjahan said steps would be taken to start the construction. “We have taken steps to issue pattas for the persons. We will discuss with the Chief Minister and construct a good auditorium for the college soon,” he said. Regarding shortage of faculty at the college, he said the existing vacancies would be filled after discussing with the departments concerned. In the annual report, college principal S. Kumuda said they have proposed to develop a library network in 2008-2009. A newsletter would be released and a national seminar on higher education would be held soon. Municipal councillor S. Rajalakshmi and members of the Parents Teachers Association spoke. A documentary on the growth of the college was also released.
