ZP meeting called off after pandemonium

Correspondent

Many members stage walkout, alleging indifference by the administration

CUTTACK: Differences in the ruling BJD in Cuttack district came to fore at the Zilla parishad meeting of the district here on Tuesday. When the meeting witnessed pandemonium after the welcome address of district Collector Sujata Karthikeyan, she suspended the meeting abruptly to prevent any untoward incident.

Many members, by then, had also staged a walkout alleging indifference by the district administration.

The anger and resentment among the elected members of the Parishad, particularly of the ruling BJD, were apparent since the beginning of the meeting as one of the members wanted a discussion on the indifference meted out to them by the zilla parishad chairperson and the district authorities.

“Some district level leaders are unnecessarily interfering in the developmental activities of the district while many members are not consulted before any important decision of the district”, a member alleged. Many also alleged that the district authorities were not feeling the importance of the parishad thereby ignoring the members of a particular group.

Chairperson Laxmibilashini Biswal of the BJD also came in for sharp criticism from her own ruling party members. It may be recalled here that the last zilla parishad meeting had also witnessed the same situation and the meeting was called off without transacting any business.

Seeing the situation going out of control, the district Collector called off the meeting. The BJD had won a thumping majority in last panchayat election in the district.
