TIRUPATTUR: A total of 71 persons were arrested for trying to burn house ‘patta’ documents handed over to them outside the Tirupattur Sub-Division Sub-Collector’s office here on Monday. According to the police, the arrested were residents of Jolarpet. A total of 150 persons belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were residing near Government Boys Higher Secondary School on Gandhi Road in Eriyampatti coming under the Jolarpet Municipality. The district administration and the municipality had evicted all those living near the school for constructing a stadium. Those who were evicted had been staying there for the last 50 years. The district administration had assured house pattas to 61 out of the 150 persons, who had been evicted, at an alternative place for constructing houses. The police said that based on the request made by the affected persons, the then tahsildar on May 10, 2007 and the present tahsildar on January 1, 2008 allotted the pattas to the affected persons in two phases. The sources said that out of the total 61 house pattas given, five persons received pattas that had been already allotted to someone else. Owing to stiff resistance from the people to whom five of the pattas had been already allotted, the Jolarpet police along with the tahsildar prohibited the 61 people from going ahead with the construction. The 61 people had approached the Collector with their representations on January 29 and March 17. But their request was not considered. Under these circumstances, the 61 people decided to burn the house pattas on Monday. The 61 people, along with some local residents, raised slogans against the State government and officials at 11 a.m. outside the Tirupattur Sub-Division Sub Collector’s office. The police stopped them from burning the house pattas. The police arrested 71 persons and detained them at V.P. Singh Marriage Hall here. All the arrested were released in the evening. One of the affected persons told reporters that all the 61 affected people would meet the Governor in person on August 15. The residents have decided to surrender their ration cards, photo identity cards and house pattas.
