Assures irrigation of 2.20 lakh acres, completion of all four irrigation projects

VIZIANAGARAM: A ‘Kisan SEZ’ at Growth Centre in Bobbili, branch canal from Thotapalli for irrigating 15,000 acres in Gajapathinagaram constituency, Rs.17-crore drinking water project for Therlam, release of water from Jhanjhavathi for 12,000 more acres this year and Rajiv Arogyasri from August, were among the promises Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy announced at Locherla village in Therlam mandal on Tuesday.

After participating in Praja Patham, the Chief Minister addressed a public meeting in the same village. Dr. Reddy said that his Government had been making every effort to implement the promises he made on the eve of the Assembly elections four years ago. He said that three lakh houses to the poor in the district would be completed by next year. He said that work on all the four irrigation projects in the district would be completed by next year and assured water to 2.20 lakh acres.

Woman saves Collector

Meanwhile, a woman saved Collector B. Kishore and in-charge Project Director of District Water Management Agency Gopala Krishna from being suspended when the Chief Minister lost his cool and asked them “who should be suspended for the lapses in payment of wages under NREGP.”

Interacting with NREGP beneficiaries at Locherla village. Dr. Reddy sought to know their earnings under the scheme. A woman complained that she was getting low pay of Rs.300 for 12 days’ work.

The Collector and the in-charge Project Director were pulled up.

A woman from the crowd came to their rescue and said that it was their (beneficiaries) fault as many a number of labourers wanted to work on the same canal and ultimately the wages per head decreased.

Earlier, the Chief Minister visited the photo exhibition on irrigation projects .
