NEW DELHI: Nominations for the post of Delhi Mayor were filed at the Municipal Corporation on Tuesday with rebel Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Jagdish Mamgain also staking his claim to the coveted post along with the party’s official nominee Arti Mehra.

Other members who filed their nomination for the post are Razia Sultana of the Congress and Sanjay of the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Increasing rift

Revealing an increasing rift within the party, the rebel contenders of the BJP included Harish Awasthi for the MCD Standing Committee (from the House), Mahender Narula from the Central Ward Committee and Dharamvir Singh for the post of Deputy Mayor.

Though senior BJP members had made clear this preference for allowing the current crop of post-holders another year in office, this apparent rebellion was indicative of an intrinsic discontent within the party ranks.

Mayor Arti Mehra said: “The decision to allow us to continue in our posts for another year was taken by the senior core group of our party. But we are a democratic set-up and every member has the right to express dissent. We will resolve the matter soon.”

Stating that his party was essentially a “disciplined” one, Leader of the House Subhash Arya said any member who had gone astray would be convinced not to take up an anti-party stand, failing which strict disciplinary action would be taken.

Other nominations

The day also saw nominations being filed by Divya Jaiswal of the BJP and Tulsi Ram Sablania of the Congress for the Deputy Mayor’s post. Other nominees included those for the MCD Standing Committee: Vijender Gupta, Rajni Abbi of the BJP and Jai Kishan Sharma and Chaudhary Ajit Singh of the Congress.

The elections for the posts of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and three MCD Standing Committee members from the House will be held on April 21 while elections for the posts of Chairman, Deputy Chairman and MCd Standing Committee members from the various Ward Committees will be held on April 22.

Elections for all the remaining posts will be conducted on April 23.
