BSP to name 150 candidates

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has cleared 150 candidates for the Assembly elections in May. The official announcement will be made after the party’s core committee meets on Thursday.

According to party general secretary P.G.R. Sindhia, the committee, headed by general secretary and Karnataka election observer Veer Singh along with the State party president Marasandra Muniyappa, and members Mahesh and Gopinath will clear the list of candidates.

The party, in a departure from convention, has decided to do away with the election manifesto. However, in line with the party’s national policy it will, if voted to power, take up clearance of slums and replace them with multi-storeyed dwelling units, not just in Bangalore but also in tier II cities. Electricity, potable water, and highly subsidised and even free foodgrains for poor families are some of the programmes of the party, said Mr. Sindhia.

The party will also create another category of the poor who earn not more than Rs. 20 a day. They will be given rice and houses free of cost.

The party is also trying to erase the perception that the BSP is a party meant only for Dalits and Other Backward Classes. It will field ‘upper caste’ candidates in Basavanagudi, Dharwad, Udupi, Mangalore and many other places.
