Railway division earnings up

Thiruvananthapuram: The Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division has earned the distinction of being the only division of Southern Railway to exceed the targets fixed by the Railway Board for the financial year 2007-2008.

The division recorded Rs.611 crore as earnings in the financial year 2007-08, thereby exceeding the earnings of the previous year by 21 per cent.

The earnings include, Rs.444 crore from passenger services; Rs.120 crore from freight services and Rs.47 crore from other miscellaneous services, railway sources said.

In the Railway week celebrations held in Chennai recently, the Thiruvananthapuram Division was selected for the General Manager’s ‘operating shield,’ ‘commercial shield,’ and awards for the ‘best track-maintained division,’ ‘best publicity earnings,’ ‘best-maintained catering outlet on Southern Railway’ and the ‘highest scrap earnings’ shield.

Several officers of the division were also named by the Railway Board for the prestigious Railway Minister’s award.

The awards will be distributed on April 16 at a function to be held at Mumbai. J. Vinayan, Senior Divisional Operations Manager; N. Balaji, Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer/Traction Distribution; R. Krishna Pillai, Divisional Signal and Telecom Engineer and Gopakumar, Inspector, Railway Protection Force (RPF) will receive the awards.

Having generated on originating business of 2.28 million tones of freight movement, the division has many firsts to its credit. This is the only Division in Indian Railways where train crew (loco pilots and guards) are both managed by the Operating Department. This enhances operating efficiency, sources said.

The 53rd Railway week celebrations of the division will be held on Wednesday.
