Police act tough on poll code violation

Hundreds of asbestos sheets and cement bags seized in Malur taluk

In another raid, large number of wall clocks recovered in Bagepalli taluk

KOLAR: Taking a tough line in implementing the model code of conduct, the election officers in Kolar and Chickballapur districts have seized various materials and registered cases for alleged violation of poll code.

Seizure of hundreds of asbestos sheets and cement bags, which were reportedly stored for free distribution at Bairatnahalli in Malur taluk in Kolar district, and taking into possession 3,000 wall clocks at Channakayapalli in Bagepalli taluk of Chickballapur district are two major operations of the poll officials.

The materials seized in Malur taluk reportedly belonged to a charitable trust run by the former Malur MLA S.N. Krishnaiah Shetty. The action evoked protests from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Kolar police, led by Superintendent of Police H.S. Revanna, have registered 20 cases in connection with the violation of model code of conduct.

The former Minister K. Srinivas Gowda, Mr. Krishnaiah Shetty and Congress leader R. Varthur Prakash were the prominent politicians against whom the cases were filed. Officials drew flak for taking into custody the wall clocks in Bagepalli taluk. S. Nanjunda Reddy, secretary of S.N. Subba Reddy Charitable Trust, said: “The trust was engaged in social work for 10 years. Distribution of clocks has nothing to do with the elections.”

Chickballapur Deputy Commissioner K. Subodh Yadav has instructed Excise and Police Department officials to take stringent measures to prevent entry of arrack from across the border.

Former MLA held

Meanwhile, Mr. Krishnaiah Shetty was arrested on Tuesday for alleged violation of model code of conduct. The Malur police have arrested Mr. Shetty and released him on the bail, Mr. Revanna said.
