dated April 16, 1958: Indian Railways

Still Asia’s largest and the world’s fourth largest railway system, the Indian railways have added 1,016.7 miles of new lines since Independence, and the total route mileage has now crossed the 35,000 mark. The Second Five Year Plan provides a six-fold increase in the electrified railway route mileage in India, the largest single railway project during the Second Plan period. As against only 240.24 electrified route miles at the end of the first Plan period, the Second Plan provides for 1,434 additional miles. The first electric train in India ran from Bombay on February 3, 1925. Three years later, the first electrified line on the ex-B.B. and C.I. Railway was opened, on January 8, 1928. The first electrified line on the ex-South Indian Railway was opened on May 11 1931. In the Eastern region, electric trains started running from Howrah on December 14, 1957.
