The shift of Nepal’s Maoists from the bullet to the ballot, ending the 240-year-old monarchy, is highly commendable. No doubt, the CPN (M) consists of former rebels who carried on an armed struggle against the state. But it is also an organisation that has overcome numerous challenges in the past. I find nothing wrong in believing that Maoists rule will improve the lives of the people, over half of whom languish in abject poverty. Amid their celebration, let not the Maoists forget that socialism entails both revolution and evolution. Just as evolution is not the continuation of the past, revolution does not mean a complete break with the past. M. Ilaiyakarnan, Coimbatore J.
