Rs. 11,772 crore allocated to panchayats

Zilla panchayats continue to have an upper hand garnering higher funds

Belgaum and Gulbarga districts occupy the first two positions in the list


GULBARGA: Budgetary allocations for panchayati raj institutions in the 29 districts for 2008-09 have been fixed at Rs. 11,772.39 crore under both the plan and non-plan heads.

Sources told The Hindu here on Tuesday that non-plan allocation for the panchayati raj bodies was on the higher side when compared to the allocation made for the plan sector.

While Rs. 7,464.33 crore has been allocated for the non-plan sector, Rs. 4,308.06 crore has been allocated for the plan sector.

In the distribution of funds for the zilla, taluk and gram panchayats, the zilla panchayats continue to have an upper hand with higher allocation followed by gram panchayats and taluk panchayats.

The 29 zilla panchayats in the State have been allocated Rs. 2,319.67 crore, followed by Rs. 1,250 crore for the gram panchayats and Rs. 738.39 crore for the taluk panchayats under the plan head.

The sources said that under the non-plan sector it was the taluk panchayats that ruled the roost with an allocation of Rs. 5,003.99 crore of the Rs. 7,464.33 crore, followed by Rs. 2,333.03 crore for the zilla panchayats and Rs. 127.39 crore for the gram panchayats.

The contribution of the Central sector in the allocation for the panchayati raj institutions under the plan sector amounted to Rs. 1,784.58 crore.

The State sector has contributed Rs. 2,523.48 crore.

While the State sector allocation for the zilla panchayats was Rs. 1,323.09 crore, the Central sector allocation was Rs. 996.58 crore.

For the taluk panchayats, the allocation under the State sector was Rs. 392.54 crore and under the Central sector Rs. 345.85 crore.

For the gram panchayats, the State sector allocation was Rs. 807.85 crore and the Central sector allocation Rs. 442.14 crore.

Belgaum and Gulbarga districts continued to occupy the first two positions in the allocations both under the plan and non-plan sectors. While Belgaum district has been allocated Rs. 215.65 crore under the plan sector and Rs. 635.65 crore under the non-plan sector,

Gulbarga district came close with an allocation of Rs. 225.35 crore under the plan sector and Rs. 623.22 crore under the non-plan sector.

Apart from this, Rs. 207.17 crore has been earmarked in the allocation as lump sum in the plan sector and Rs. 191.40 crore in the non plan sector.
