Akhil hits century

KOTTAYAM: A fine century by R. Akhil (163) helped Thiruvananthapuram gain a 278-run lead over Pathanamthitta in the two-day South Zone under-16 inter-district cricket tournament at the University ground here on Tuesday.

Thiruvananthapuram, which dismissed Pathanamthitta for a paltry 71 in its first innings, was also helped by contributions from Nithin Jacob Philip (87) and Athul Diamond (57) to end the day at 349 for four in 50.4 overs.

In another match, at the Medical College ground, host Kottayam was 87 for three in its first essay at stumps in reply to Alappuzha’s total of 149 in 52.5 overs.

The scores: Pathanamthitta 71 in 31.3 overs (Abhishek Mohan four for 24) vs Thiruvananthapuram 349 for four in 50.4 overs (R. Akhil 163, Nithin Jacob Philip 87, Athul Diamond 57).

Alappuzha 149 in 52.5 overs (Tony Jose four for 57) vs Kottayam 87 for three in 23.2 overs (A. Amal 50).
