Posing health hazard: Pigs swarming on a drainage canal at Jeeva Nagar in Tirupur. — TIRUPUR: Residents of Jeeva Nagar and Balaji Nagar in the southern part of the city are worried about pig menace. The vacant land has turned out to be a dumping yard for residents to conveniently dump garbage. The pile of garbage and other wastes and the stagnation of waste water poses health hazards for residents. The stagnation of drainage in the absence of storm water drain causes great disturbance to the residents nearby. Foul smellResidents complain that they cannot tolerate the foul smell emanated from the drainage. On the other hand, the stagnation of waste water and garbage is proving to be a breeding ground for pigs. Councillor Santhamani said that she had raised the issue at the Corporation council meetings over the menace of pigs. The civic authorities could not find the owners of the pigs and they were not taking action to remove them from the area, she complained. Hundreds of motorists and school students used the area, and it was increasingly inconvenient for them because of the increasing number of pigs. They urged the Corporation officials to clear the bushes around the vacant land and keep the area clean by removing the garbage.
