‘Tremor’ leaves people in jitters

Staff Reporter

Kakinada: Tension prevailed at Uppada and Kotthapalli villages near Kakinada on Tuesday night following a talk that an earthquake struck the area. But there was no confirmation of the tremor. As word spread that a mild earthquake hit the villages, people panicked and some of them rushed out of their houses.

Panic calls

Meanwhile, the district officials received a slew of phone calls as to whether there was really a calamity in the coastal villages which are well known for their vulnerability to sea erosion.

District Revenue Officer M Mohan Raju told The Hindu that he too received anxious calls, but news about the earthquake was unfounded.
