KANNUR: Just when it seemed the match would end in a goalless draw, substitute Chandra Singh came up with a goal for Sporting Clube de Goa on Tuesday night. The injury-time goal helped the Goans score a 1-0 win over a fighting Mohammedan AC, Kolkata, on day two of the second E.K. Nayanar Memorial Gold Cup football tournament at the Municipal Jawahar Stadium here. It was a vastly improved display in the second half by Sporting; the Goans created opportunity after opportunity, but their strikers always managed to waste each one of them, with Emmanuel being the main culprit, until Chandra, who came in for Levy Fernandes, struck. The goal came off a corner kick taken by G. Fulgence. An unmarked William Gomes managed to sneak a pass, from the left edge of the box, to Chandra, who slotted the ball home. The Kolkatans appeared to be tired after dominating the first half, in which they missed quite a few chances. The game opened with them exerting pressure on the Sporting half. Their first chance came in the third minute, when their hard-working striker Olowonilafe Seheed fired in a long ranger from the left, just wide off the target. In the 19th minute, a long ranger from Avijit Mondal went straight to the ’keeper, David D’Souza. Sporting’s first chance came only in the 22nd minute, but Emmanuel put the ball too wide following goal mouth melee. On Wednesday, Mohammedan takes on Kerala XI.
