ESTORIL: Roger Federer rallied from a set down to beat Olivier Rochus of Belgium 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday in the first round of the clay-court Estoril Open.

The top-ranked Swiss player had eight aces in the first set, but made too many forced errors. His double-fault on set point in the seventh game — one of 53 unforced errors in the match — allowed the 80th-ranked Belgian to lead 4-3. In the fourth game of the second set, Federer squandered two break points with wayward shots. But he broke Rochus’s serve in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. Federer looked more composed in the final set andbroke Rochus’s serve twice.

Fifteen-year-old Ryan Harrison beat Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 6-4, 6-3 in the U.S. claycourt championship in Houston on Monday to become the 10th player in the Open era to win a main-draw match before his 16th birthday.
