Lokesh and Sangeetha claims titles

CHENNAI: P. Lokesh (SBOA) and former State champion M.R. Sangeetha won the titles in the men’s and women’s categories respectively in the Chennai District chess championship which concluded on Monday.

Lokesh was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 1,000 and the A.N. Parasuram Memorial Rolling Trophy, while Sangeetha was richer by Rs. 600.

Final round results: Men: N.R. Abhinav (5) lost to P. Lokesh (7); J. Arun (5.5) bt G. Ravindran (4.5); P. Ganesh (5) drew with Anana Sivasankar (5); G. Akash (4) lost to D.S. Shashaank (5.5); G. Jaswant (5) bt Siddarth (4).

Women: M.R. Sangeetha (4.5) drew with C.H. Savetha (3.5); Michelle Catherina (3.5) drew with Alagu Sala (3.5); G. Uma Bharathi (2) lost to J.G. Nivedhitha (3.5); P. Balakannamma (3) bt R. Abirami (2); G. Thenammai (2) lost to Akshitha (3).

Final standings: Men: 1. P. Lokesh (SBOA) 7; 2. J. Arun (Velammal) 5.5; 3. D.S. Shashaank (Jawahar Vidyalaya) 5.5; 4. Anana Sivasankar (ECC) 5; 5. P. Ganesh (JRM School) 5; 6. N.R. Abhinav (Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram) 5.

Venkatesh excels

A fine all-round performance (83 not out and five for 11) by P. Venkatesh enabled Aircel beat HCL by 52 runs in the V.S. Sports Network Seventymm Corporate twenty20 cricket tournament held here recently.

Aircel 136 for eight in 20 overs (P. Venkatesh 83 not out) bt HCL 84 in 16.4 overs (P. Venkatesh five for 11); Sify 153 for six in 20 overs (Shyam 64) bt Seventymm 42 in 11.3 overs; SS Music 105 in 19 overs lost to Big 92.7FM 106 for eight in 19.5 overs; Covansys CSC 144 for four in 20 overs bt Reliance 120 for nine in 20 overs.

Chess tournament

Entries close on April 17 for the Vishy Anand–Hero Cycles State-level children chess championship for under–8, 10, 12, 14 and 18.
