Street vendor held for murder
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: A 24-year-old street vendor has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police in connection with the murder of a 70-year-old professor at East Patel Nagar during a robbery earlier this year.
Nitish Bhasin of Yamuna Vihar found his guide V.K. Gupta, a professor at Sachdeva P.T. College, murdered when he went to meet him at his East Patel Nagar residence on February 5. Nitish told the police that Prof. Gupta’s hands were tied up with a cloth and a muffler was wrapped round his neck. Based on the information, a murder-cum-robbery case was registered at the Patel Nagar police station and investigations were handed over to the Special Operations Squad of the Crime Branch.
During investigations, the police learnt that some local boys frequently visited the professor and one of them, Mukesh Soni, was absconding. Based on a tip-off, the police arrested him. During interrogation, Mukesh purportedly confessed to having killed Prof. Gupta during a robbery along with his accomplice Vinod. When the accused learnt that Prof. Gupta was planning to buy a car, he allegedly hatched a plan to rob him. He and Vinod strangulated him and made off with Rs.26,000 in cash and a cell phone, the police said.
