Contract killing accused remanded to police custody

Staff Reporter

Taken to murder spot for corroborating disclosures

Allegedly identified the place where Gupta was shot

Disclosures by other accused being corroborated

NEW DELHI: Junaid, one of the alleged contract killers behind the murder of businessman Arun Gupta at Kalkaji in South Delhi nearly a week ago, was on Tuesday produced in a local court that remanded him to police custody till April 23.

Later in the day, Junaid was taken to the murder spot by a Special Cell team for corroboration of the disclosures made by him during interrogation. Junaid allegedly identified the place where Gupta was shot. He told the police that on the fateful day he along with his accomplices Shakeel and Abu Zar waited for Gupta to come out of his house. He was nearing a roundabout when one of the assailants opened fire at him. However, the bullet missed the target.

Realising that it was a gunshot, Gupta tried to accelerate his Wagon-R but due to slow-moving traffic he could not go very far. He was shot dead by the second assailant from point-blank range.

While the disclosures made by the other accused are being compared and corroborated, the police have recovered a country-made firearm and Rs.40,000 from the house of accused Parvez. Investigations have revealed his involvement in over half-a-dozen criminal cases in Uttar Pradesh. The police have sought details of the cases from the U.P. police.

It is learnt that during interrogation Dinesh Mittal, brother-in-law of Arun Gupta who allegedly masterminded the murder, told the police that he felt no remorse for what he had done. He purportedly told his interrogators that he had worked with his father to expand the family business but it was his brother-in-law who was reaping the benefits.

While four persons have been arrested in the case so far, the police are yet to arrest Shakeel, Abu Zar and Parvez’s accomplice Afroz. Raids are being mounted to track them down.
