Commission to submit its report in three months

CHENNAI: The State government on Wednesday appointed former Judge of the Madras High Court Justice P. Shanmugam to inquire into the alleged overhearing and recording of a telephonic conversation between Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy and an Additional Director-General of Police.
This follows Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s announcement in the Assembly on Tuesday that a one-man Commission would be constituted to probe the telephone tapping.
According to an order issued by the Chief Secretary, the Commission would inquire into the origin of the transcript besides probing the source and the agency responsible for the news item on the conversation between the two.
It would also make recommendations to the State government on “the specific criminal action to be taken against the person or agency or both who are responsible for the transcript and also for tapping the conversation if any.” The Commission would submit its report in three months.
