NRIs to celebrate Palamoor Day on April 20

Correspondent

MAHABUBNAGAR: Palamoor NRIs Forum has embarked on yet another programme to focus on the skills of artisans of the district. The forum is all set to celebrate ‘Palamoor Day’ on April 20 at Zilla Parishad mini-stadium where the handloom weavers will display their khadi products, khadi weavers and societies located in different parts of the district will open stalls on the Palamoor Day celebrations for the convenience of khadi aficionados.

Disclosing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, the Palamoor NRIs forum co-ordinator Vijay Chavva said that this time their forum was focusing on the products of weavers for the community was in dire distress as day by day the number of customers to their products was decreasing. This situation is leading to the suicide deaths of weavers.

In the past one year 143 weavers ended their lives in distress condition, he added. Explaining about this forum Vijay Chavva said that NRIs belonging to Mahabubnagar district and settled in America, have decided to repay the debt to their birthplace by mitigating the sufferings of marginalized sections of the society to the possible extent.

Accordingly a group of 500 NRIs settled in USA have formed Palamoor NRIs Forum in 2002. He said during the past five years the forum has conducted several health camps, eye camps with the cooperation of Lions Club, Rotary club, Red Cross Society and other NGOs, besides awareness camps to those candidates who want to go abroad for higher studies.

He said a ‘pressure group’ was formed in USA by Palamoor NRIs which presented the case of marginalized sections of Mahabubnagar district before the VVIPs who visit America.

Video screened

The group also screened a video which depicts the plights and suffering of migrant agricultural labourers in Mahabubnagar district.
