A new school exclusively for girls was launched by Planning Commission member Sayeeda Hameed at Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi this past week. The Jamia Girls’ Senior Secondary School will have an all-women faculty and the medium of instruction will be Urdu. At the senior secondary level, it will focus exclusively on science and computers. There will be no age limit for girls or women wishing to seek admission to the new school. Dr. Hameed welcomed the Jamia move, calling it a “much-needed valuable initiative that was in sync with the Prime Minister’s call for education which is tied up with job skills”. Jamia Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hasan announced that 10 per cent of the seats would be reserved for students from financially depressed families. Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, opened its International Programme in Management for Executives (IPMX), the first full-time one-year residential executive programme on its Noida campus, this past week. IPMX was formally inaugurated by Hari Shankar Singhania, former Chairman of IIM Lucknow. The programme has a strong in-built international module, where a term will be spent at the Faculty of Management, McGill University, Montreal. “It is our endeavour at IIM Lucknow to build a global school with a social conscience. Our recent initiatives have all been steps in the right direction, whether it is starting an international programme or looking deeply into different concerns like environment, public health and agriculture,” said IIM Lucknow Director Devi Singh. Asloob Ahmad Ansari, a distinguished Urdu and English critic and illustrious literary figure at Aligarh Muslim University, has recently published a new book, “Iqbal: The Visionary”. Divided into 15 chapters, this work brings into sharp focus Iqbal’s seminal concepts and his mythic configurations. The book also contains Prof. Ansari’s critique of several poems of Iqbal. Born in 1925, Prof. Ansari was educated in Delhi, Aligarh and Oxford. He was the founder-editor of Aligarh Journal of English Studies, Aligarh Critical Miscellany and Naqd-o-Nazar. He has been conferred a large number of prestigious literary awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award. FOSTIIMA Business School (FBS), which has been set up by a group of seven alumni of IIM Ahmedabad, has announced admission to its courses. The institute offers an MBA degree with specialisation in marketing, finance, international business, retail services, financial services, export and investment management. It also offers a BBA degree with specialisation in finance, export, tourism an d retail. The admissions are open till May 15. The admission form can be downloaded from www.fbsdelhi.org. IAAN School of Mass Communication has also opened admission for its specialised media courses for the academic year 2008-09. The courses on offer are a master’s in mass communication; post-graduate diploma in mass communication, advertising and journalism, and bachelor of journalism and mass communication. Forms can be downloaded from www.iaan.org. The last date for submission of forms is April 30.
Satyam Fashion Institute, Noida, has announced admission to its two-year post-graduate degree in fashion retailing for the coming academic session. Forms can be obtained from its Noida office or www.satyamfashion.ac.in or www.sndtcet.in. The last date for submitting forms is April 30. Parul Sharma
