CUDDALORE: The former Prime Minister, Deve Gowda, has held the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government responsible for the soaring prices of essential commodities. He was speaking to reporters at Thiruvahindrapuram, near here, on Wednesday. None in the government could explain the inflationary trend. Shifting the blame on someone else for the lapses was an old ploy that would not work. Spiralling inflation was wreaking havoc on the poor, he said. On the Hogenakkal water supply scheme that triggered violence both in Karanataka and Tamil Nadu recently, Mr. Gowda said he had appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to find an amicable solution, but nothing tangible seemed to have been done. About the chances of his Janata Dal (Secular) winning the coming Karnataka Assembly elections scheduled for May, he said, “I leave it to the people and God.” Earlier, Mr. Gowda arrived at Puducherry by helicopter and later proceeded by road to a temple. He was accompanied by his son and former Karnataka Minister H.D.Revanna.
