Aslam saves Pathanamthitta

KOTTAYAM: A fighting half-century by Aslam (85 not out) denied Thiruvananthapuram an out-right victory over Pathanamthitta in the South Zone under-16 inter-district cricket tournament at the University stadium here on Wednesday.

Pathanamthitta, which started its second innings with a deficit of 477 runs, was 170 for seven off 51 overs when play ended. Nithin Jacob Philip grabbed three quick wickets for two runs to bring Thiruvananthapuram closer to victory, but Aslam’s gritty knock fetched his side a draw. Thiruvananthapuram took two points for its first innings lead.

Kottayam gains lead

At the Medical College ground, the Kottayam-Alappuzha match ended in a draw. The host, which started the day on a comfortable 87 for three, collapsed but managed to take the all-important first innings lead thanks to Arun who scored a useful 37. Kottayam despite losing its last seven wickets for 72 runs managed to gain a 10-run lead. The host took two points for the first innings lead.

The scores: Pathanamthitta 73 & 170 for seven in 51 overs (Aslam 85 n.o., Deepu Devadas 42, Nithin Jacob Philip three for two, Varun Ashok three for 33) drew with Thiruvananthapuram 550 in 87.2 overs (R. Akhil 163, R.S. Ranjith 90, Nithin Jacob Philip 81, Atul Diamond 57, Sharath five for 120, Prashob R. Pillai three for 59).

Alappuzha 149 & 242 in 59.2 overs (Rahul 62, Tony Jose five for 67, Amal three for 34) drew with Kottayam 159 in 57.4 overs (Amal 50, Arun 37, R. Rahul four for 35) & 62 for four in 17 overs. — Principal Correspondent
