KOLKATA: Kolkata Knight Riders named a 14-member squad, including five foreign players, for its opening IPL match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 18. The five — Ricky Ponting and David Hussey of Australia, Brendon McCullum of New Zealand, Chris Gayle of the West Indies and Mohammad Hafiz of Pakistan — will join captain Sourav Ganguly and the other Indian players in the team’s quest to excel in the Twenty20 format. Two Pakistanis — Salman Butt and Umar Gul — are yet to join the squad, while Shoaib Akhtar, who has been banned for five years by PCB, will not be able to play till the ban is overturned. Coach John Buchanan said the squad was named after consulting Ganguly. Good mixThe Aussie coach said the squad was a nice mix of youth and experience. To a question, he said medium-pacer Ashok Dinda and all-rounder Laxmi Ratan Shukla were good enough to prove their worth in this form of the game. The squad: Sourav Ganguly (Capt.), Ricky Ponting, Brendon McCullum, Chris Gayle, David Hussey, Mohd. Hafiz, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Wriddhiman Saha, Ajit Agarkar, Ashok Dinda, Ishant Sharma, Murali Kartik, Debabrata Das and Syed Iqbal Abdullah. — Special Correspondent
