Rs. 15 subsidy on edible oil
New Delhi: Under attack over rising prices, the government on Wednesday announced a slew of measures, including Rs 15-a litre subsidy on edible oil. The Prime Minister is also contemplating calling a meeting of Chief Ministers to discuss steps to tackle the rising prices.
In the Lok Sabha, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar announced the subsidy on edible oil, which would now be sold through the public distribution system, besides import of one million tonnes of edible oil and 15 lakh tonnes of pulses to overcome shortage. The government would ban futures trading in essential commodities if the Abhijeet Sen Committee did not submit its report within 10 days.
Finance Minister P. Chidambaram warned of a crackdown on hoarders and said the government would do every thing in its powers to tackle cartelisation by steel and cement manufacturers. — PTI
