Special Correspondent

He was arrested in December, let on bail

Hailing from Tiruchi, Palanichamy came to Chennai and started a tea shop

He was reported to have attended a function near his house

TAMBARAM: A 48-year-old self-styled godman and his woman companion, reported to be his third wife, were found dead in a house in Sithalapakkam near Tambaram on Wednesday.

Palanichamy, also known as ‘suruttu saamiar’ and Divya (26), a homeopathy practitioner, were found dead inside the house in which they were staying in Thyagi Vishwanatheswara Nagar.

The Pallikaranai police, who sent the bodies to the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital (Chromepet GH) for port-mortem, said that a case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (death under suspicious circumstances) was registered.

The cause of the death could be ascertained only after they received the post-mortem report. Palanichamy hit the headlines in December last when he was arrested by the Madipakkam police following a complaint from Chandra, his first wife, that his reported marriage with Divya was illegal. He was released on bail. Hailing from Tiruchi, Palanichamy came to Chennai several years ago and started a tea shop. He married Chandra and later Manimegalai, the police said. He established a temple in Madipakkam .

On Wednesday, he was reported to have attended a function near his house and returned home at 10.30 a.m. An hour later, Palanichamy and Divya were noticed unconscious by his second wife Manimegalai.

On information, the Pallikaranai police took them to Chromepet Government Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival. Among others staying with the self-styled godman and Divya were Manimekalai and her two children, Muthuveeran and Kumaresan.
