Populist schemes will not help: CPI
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: Alleging that the government has launched the Rs. 2-a-kg rice scheme with an eye on the elections, the CPI State council expressed concern at the way the ruling Congress and the opposition Telugu Desam are trying to lure voters by announcing a slew of populist schemes.
Reacting to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s open letter on the scheme, CPI State secretary K. Narayana on Wednesday questioned why the government, which announced the launch of Rs. 2,000-crore rice scheme, had failed to make mention of land-related issues.
Recalling that the CPI had warned the government about the possibility of lapses in irrigation projects, he said remedial measures were initiated only after instances of irregularities came to the fore.
This showed that the government was not keen on taking action to rectify the lapses.
Dr. Narayana advised the government not to be under the “wrong impression” that the then Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao had come to power because of the Rs. 2-a-kg rice scheme.
The Janata Party won the election without any such promise in neighbouring Karnataka.
