Congress gains in West Bengal
Special Correspondent
KOLKATA: The Congress has retained the Kharba Assembly seat in West Bengal’s Malda district. The result for the by-election that was held on April 12 was announced on Wednesday.
The by-election followed the death of Congress MLA Mahabub-ul-Haque.
Asif Mehboob defeated his closest rival Anjumanara Begum of the CPI(M) by more than 10,000 votes.
The nominee of the Trinamool Congress was pushed to the fourth position, polling lesser votes than the BJP candidate. The two candidates forfeited their deposits.
With Mr. Huq’s victory, the tally of the Congress in the 294 member Assembly is now 21.
